Koalas could disappear from New South Wales within 30 years as a result of drought and fires, a conservation scientist warned Australian authorities on Tuesday.
Prior to the fire crisis, koalas were not listed as an endangered species. Now, Dr Stuart Blanch of the World Wildlife Fund says the marsupial must be listed as officially endangered after about one third of the koala population in New South Wales was lost to severe drought and a prolonged wild-fire crisis.
Dr Blanch told a New South Wales government inquiry that people conducting surveys have reported “we might have lost 10,000 koalas from the fires and the droughts”.
