UK PM Boris Johnson and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have laid flowers at the scene of the stabbing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

Police are treating the attack as a terrorist incident, which may be linked to Islamist extremism. A 25-year-old British man is being held on suspicion of murder.

Sir David had been holding one of his regular Friday meetings with his constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church when he was stabbed multiple times.

    Sir David Anthony Andrew Amess MP was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament for Southend West from 1997 until his killing in 2021. He previously served as MP for Basildon from 1983 to 1997. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He was born and grew up in Essex.

    On October 15 2021, Amess was fatally stabbed at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, UK. A 25 year old suspect was detained at the scene.
