Ketanji Brown Jackson made history on Thursday after the U.S. Senate voted 53-47 in favour of confirming her as an associate justice of the Supreme Court (SCOTUS), the first Black woman to sit on the nation’s highest court.
The 51-year-old federal appeals court judge is the third Black justice, after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, and the sixth woman to hold the position.
Once she takes her seat on the bench, she will be one of four women on the court, the highest number SCOTUS has seen in its history at one time. She will assume the role once Stephen Breyer retires at the end of the court’s current term.
In the end, Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney joined all 48 Democrats, and two Independents who caucus with the Democrats, to confirm Jackson to the court.
