White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway says President Donald Trump is the most “prolific user” of Twitter and should not be fact checked.
“The President is saying, please stop suppressing conservative voices and folks who feel like they don’t necessarily are treated fairly there,” said Conway.
“I thought using, using outlets that are decisively and proudly anti Trump to fact check the president was maybe the richest piece of the whole thing.”
This comes after Twitter added a warning phrase to two Trump tweets that called mail-in ballots “fraudulent” and predicted that “mail boxes will be robbed,” among other things.
Under the tweets, there is now a link reading “Get the facts about mail-in ballots” that guides users to a Twitter “moments” page with fact checks and news stories about Trump’s unsubstantiated claims.
Trump then threatened social media companies with new regulation or even shuttering a day after Twitter added fact checks to those tweets.
The president can’t unilaterally regulate or close the companies, which would require action by Congress or the Federal Communications Commission.
But that didn’t stop Trump from angrily issuing a strong warning.
Conway also talked about Trump’s fight against voting by mail for the November election.
“Why are we presuming five months beforehand that people predominantly or exclusively are only going to want and be able to vote by mail?” said Conway.
“People are very proud to show up and go to the polls. They really are. I mean, they wait in line for a Georgetown Cupcake for an hour to get a cupcake. So I think they can probably wait in line to do something as consequential and critical and constitutionally significant as cast their ballot.”
