Indian soldiers have shot and killed a young man at checkpoint in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, triggering anti-India protests and clashes, local officials said.
The man was driving a car and ignored signals to stop at the western Srinagar checkpoints, said India’s Central Reserve Police Force in a statement. The police said the soldiers were afraid of a potential sabotage because a military convoy was passing at the time of shooting.
The father of the victim, however, says his son did not jump a checkpoint.
Since 1989, around 70,000 people have died in clashes between militant and civilian protesters and Indian security patrol.
