Joe Biden accused the dead former Islamic State leader of “desperate cowardice” after he blew himself and his family up during a daring US special forces raid in Syria.

Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi exploded a bomb that killed himself and members of his family, including women and children, as US forces closed in on the third floor of a building where he was hiding.

Speaking at the White House Mr Biden said: “Thanks to the bravery of our troops this horrible terrorist leader is no more.

“In a final act of desperate cowardice he chose to blow up that third floor rathe than face justice for the crimes he has committed, taking several members of his family with him, just as his predecessor did.”

Mr Biden added: “Under my orders we successfully removed a major threat to the world, the global leader of Isis.”

He said the terror leader had been responsible for “savaging communities and murdering innocents.”
