Joe Biden delivers Thanksgiving address, discourages large gatherings amid COVID-19 pandemic

Global News published this video item, entitled “Joe Biden delivers Thanksgiving address, discourages large gatherings amid COVID-19 pandemic” – below is their description.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday delivered a Thanksgiving address from Wilmington, Delaware, in which he sought unity and pleaded with Americans to take steps to remain safe as COVID-19 cases surge. Biden urged people to forgo big family gatherings, wear protective masks and maintain social distancing, adding that his own family would be having separate Thanksgiving gatherings. Since winning the Nov. 3 election, Biden has also offered a message of national healing and reconciliation, while President Donald Trump still refuses to concede and falsely claims the election was stolen. “Our democracy was tested this year, and what we learned is this: the people of this nation are up to the task,” he said. “People of this nation and the laws of the land won’t stand for anything else.” Public health officials have urged Americans to stay at home for Thursday’s holiday and avoid large gatherings. More than 260,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, with the daily toll on Tuesday surpassing 2,000 for the first time since May. • In This Story: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is best known as a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November every year, usually through feasting, parades and travel to see family and friends, though celebrations have been scaled back during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

The roots of the modern celebration lie in settlers celebrating their arrival in the Americas in the early 1600’s. It has been a public holiday since 1941 due to federal legislation, an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving has been a celebration of the blessings of the year, including the harvest. What Americans call the “Holiday Season” generally begins with Thanksgiving. The first day after Thanksgiving Day—Black Friday—marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.
