Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa set off towards the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian Soyuz rocket on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. The fashion tycoon, his video producer and a Russian cosmonaut began their six-hour journey from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which is leased to Russia. The trio plans to spend 12 days aboard the ISS. Maezawa said he will document the experience for his 810,000 YouTube followers. The trip marks a huge year for space and suborbital travel, following successful launches by companies owned by billionaires Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos. The launch also marks Russia’s return to space tourism after a 12-year hiatus.
