As Japan marked one year to go until the 2021 Summer Olympic Games on Thursday, the Ariake Arena, the volleyball and wheelchair basketball venue of the games, was lit up in Olympic colors.
The building in Tokyo was first lit up in blue on Thursday evening as a tribute to the country’s health workers for their efforts to combat the coronavirus.
Then, after 30 seconds of darkness, the venue switched to Olympic colors.
Marking one year before the Olympics is usually carried out amid considerable fanfare.
But after the 2020 Games were delayed because of the virus, and with most of the world still struggling to contain it, this one-year landmark was muted.
Tokyo’s governor Yuriko Koike said the fight against the coronavirus is the main priority for the year ahead.
She made her comments as the Tokyo region confirmed a record 366 new coronavirus cases on Thursday.
