Troops from Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, the US Marines and the French Army conducted joint drills at training grounds in Japan’s Miyazaki prefecture on May 15, 2021 – a first for France in the region. The joint exercises, which also included Australia’s navy, comes at a time when Washington and Tokyo are ramping up military activities amid rising tensions with China over territorial disputes in the East China Sea.
