    Japan’s department stores, bars and theatres closed on Sunday as a state of emergency kicked in amid growing worries about a surge in Covid-19 cases.

    The 17-day measure was declared for Tokyo, Kyoto, Hyogo and Osaka ahead of the Golden Week holidays.
