A rapid new wave of infections has suddenly spread across Myanmar, leaving the country’s medical infrastructure on the verge of collapse.

A high-profile victim – senior adviser and spokesman for the National League for Democracy, or NLD, has died in jail after contracting the coronavirus.

Nyan Win was jailed after the military coup that overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s party in February.
