Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has proposed setting up an international task force to counter the threat of ISIL (ISIS) in West Africa’s Sahel region.

The US secretary of state backed the idea at a meeting of the global coalition to defeat the armed group.

ISIL has made major gains in recent weeks in Nigeria, the Sahel, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
