Italians launch fireworks at police helicopter as they flout coronavirus lockdown restrictions

Italian authorities have fined a group of Italians who set off powerful fireworks from a rooftop barbecue when a police helicopter buzzed overhead to check if they were breaking lockdown restrictions.

The revelers were branded “idiots” after detonating the fireworks in an act of defiance when their Easter celebrations, on top of a block of flats in Palermo in Sicily, were rumbled by the helicopter.

As they set off the bangers and rockets, several gleefully took photos and videos of themselves and posted them on social media, enabling police to identify the ringleaders.

They were accused of contravening Italy’s nationwide coronavirus lockdown, with the first fines issued on Tuesday.
