Millions of Italians have cast their ballots in a national election and the exit polls show Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party has come out on top in the snap election. How will this change the direction of Italy and the EU? What do we know about Italy’s next prime minister? And can the new leader bring new stability to the country?

The capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s “David” and Brunelleschi’s Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.
