German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday condemned the killing of George Floyd in the United States as “terrible”.
“It is racism”, she said.
Merkel said she hoped American society would not become more divided, and expressed her belief in the democratic power of the US to deal with the situation.
Floyd, a handcuffed black man, died in Minneapolis last week after a white police officer pressed his knee on his neck until he stopped breathing.
His death has sparked demonstrations in the United States and across the world.
