For centuries Istanbul’s Byzantine masterpiece the Hagia Sophia Ayasofia has reflected the switching rule and power of empires.

Sitting in the historical meeting point between Christianity and Islam it has been cathedral, mosque and museum.

But its latest chapter could be its most controversial yet because Turkey’s embattled President Erdogan has announced that he is turning it back into a mosque.
