Global News published this video item, entitled “Israel remembers victims of the Holocaust with nationwide standstill” – below is their description.
A memorial siren brought traffic, pedestrians and cafe-goers to a halt in Israel on Thursday as the nation honoured six million Jews killed in the Nazi Holocaust.
Sirens sounded nationwide with traffic stopped and motorists stepping out of their vehicles to stand for two minutes in honur of the Holocaust dead.
At Holocaust Remembrance Day last year, Israel was locked down and families confined to their homes by COVID-19 restrictions, and most ceremonies were held online.
This year, family gatherings are permitted again in Israel, where infection rates have dropped dramatically, and assisted living facilities have been welcoming visitors, easing the loneliness of many of the country’s survivors, now numbering some 180,000.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and president Reuven Rivlin attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial museum in Jerusalem.
The scene will be repeated next week, when Israel holds its annual remembrance day for its dead in the Middle East conflict.
