  • Hundreds of LGBTQ supporters attended the annual gay pride rally in Jerusalem on Sunday, under police protection and amid Covid-19 social distancing measures.

Events were also held in the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheva.

During the Jerusalem rally, a minute of silence was held for Shira Banki, a 16-year-old girl who was stabbed to death during the city’s gay pride parade in 2015.

Jerusalem usually holds muted gay pride festivities, in contrast to liberal Tel Aviv which drew more than 250,000 people to its parade last year.

Many of Jerusalem’s residents are observant Jews, Muslims or Christians, communities that often frown on homosexuality, although violent attacks on gay people are rare.

Earlier Sunday, the Israeli government warned that the country was at the beginning of a second wave of coronavirus infections.
