Israel has intensified its assault on Gaza, as Palestinian militants continue to fire rockets into Israel on the fifth day of hostilities.

Israel’s military said air and ground forces were involved in attacks on Friday but had not entered Gaza.

Video from Gaza City showed the night sky lit up by explosions from Israeli artillery, gunboats and air strikes.

Some 119 people have been killed in Gaza and eight have died in Israel since fighting began on Monday.

In the news item, reporter Stephen Sakur explained how Israel stepped up attacks on Palestinian militants in Gaza. The number of Palestinians killed in recent days had at the time of this report risen to 119, including 31 children.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) said the attacks were necessary to disrupt militant tunnels, and that it had not been possible to warn civilians of the attack in advance.

In the same period, over 1,800 rockets were launched by Palestinians into Israeli territory, nine Israeli’s have been killed by this activity.

Apparently there was a massing of Israeli force on the border of Gaza in recent days, but no incursion had taken place at the time of this report.
