Both sides have claimed victory after a ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas silenced the 11-day bombardments that have left more than 200 dead.

The truce took effect last night and appears to be holding, despite Israeli police firing tear gas and stun grenades at demonstrators holding Palestinian flags, at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Violence at the mosque two weeks ago helped spark hostilities between Palestinians and Israelis.
