6 people were wounded during a supermarket stabbing attack in Auckland, New Zealand on September 3, 2021. The attacker, reportedly inspired by the militant group Islamic State, was shot dead by police within 60 seconds of beginning the stabbing spree. He was a Sri Lankan national who arrived in the country 10 years ago and had been under surveillance since 2016 as the subject of court suppression orders. The motivation behind the incident is unclear. Police have said the attacker was acting alone and there was no further danger to the community.
