The oil industry has become an issue of debate in the US presidential election. While Republican candidate Donald Trump promises to extract even more oil and natural gas, Democrat Hillary Clinton plans to continue Barack Obama’s policy of developing renewable energies.
Thanks in part to new technologies like fracking, the United States has increased its oil production by 75% since 2008 and remains one of the world’s largest oil producer.
But US oil production remains controversial. The recent oil glut means the price per barrel has plummeted, while critics of fossil fuels continue to cite environmental concerns.
Our reporters travelled from California to Oklahoma to meet independent oil producers and show the human face of an industry often seen as opaque.
