Iraqi forces advance on Mosul’s Old City
Iraqi troops say they’ve opened five humanitarian corridors for civilians fleeing Mosul as they launch their final assault on the ISIL-held city.
Around 100,000 civilians live in the Old City of Mosul, a maze of narrow streets and alleyways where fighting is expected to be conducted house to house.
It’s understood 13 civilians have already been killed by shelling from Iraqi forces.
Commanders say soldiers will enter in small batches with light weaponry in order to minimise civilian casualties.
Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Erbil.
