A new Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News found support for Liberals has dropped, while support for Conservatives has grown in the wake of former finance minister Bill Morneau’s resignation.
Ipsos vice president Sean Simpson said approval ratings for Trudeau are still high, but that even without a leader the Conservatives are now “in striking distance” of the Liberals federally.
Morneau’s decision to step down as finance minister comes after reports of a growing rift between him and the prime minister over COVID-19 recovery, as well as Morneau’s role in the WE Charity controversy.
Among those polled prior to Morneau’s resignation, the Liberals sat at 36 per cent among decided voters while the Conservatives were close behind at 31 per cent.
After Morneau’s resignation, Liberal support dropped to 34 per cent and Conservative support rose to 33 per cent.
The poll has a margin of error of 2.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20, meaning those results fall within the statistical margin of error.
