Calls for Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to hold new, fair elections are growing, both within and outside of the country. Leading the international outcry are the country’s Baltic neighbours and Poland. Lithuania has accused Belarus of escalating tensions after it started military drills on its western border.

On 11 March 1990, a year before the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union, Lithuania became the first Baltic state to proclaim its independence, resulting in the restoration of the independent State of Lithuania.

Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country located in Central Europe. It is divided into 16 administrative provinces, covering an area of 312,696 square kilometres, and has a largely temperate seasonal climate.
Poland’s capital and largest metropolis is Warsaw.
