A 3 metre high tsunami was reported West of Sumatra Island after an earthquake linked to the eruption of Mount Merapi on Java Island, Indonesia. It hit the Mentawai Islands and Indonesian authorities are still searching for bodies.
It is believed that 100 people were killed and a further 500 are missing, according to the Earthquake Hazards Program.
Over nine separate earthquakes measuring more than 4.8 on the Richter scale were recorded on 25th and 26th October 2010 by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
At 10.42pm on the 25th, in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia a 7.5 Richter earthquake hit at 3.1°S, 100.1°E or 235km Southeast of Siberut, Indonesia. 649km Southwest of Malacca.
The Pacific Tsunami Center said:
“A significant tsunami was generated by this earthquake. However, sea level readings now indicate that the threat has diminished or is over for most areas. Therefore the tsunami watch issued by this center is now cancelled.”
An aviation colour code red has been issued for aircraft flying near to Mount Merapi.
