Local residents in Indonesia’s city of Malang said they are “saddened” and “shocked” after more than 130 people were killed during a stampede that erupted from the crowd at a soccer match.
After the match on Oct. 1 between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended, supporters from the losing team invaded the pitch and police had fired tear gas, triggering a stampede that left people trampled, East Java police chief Nico Afinta told reporters.
Footage showed people rushing onto the pitch in the stadium in Malang and injured fans being carried from the stadium.
On Sunday at Kanjuruhan Stadium, where burnt vehicles still lined the street, local residents brought flowers to demonstrate their condolences.
“This is very sad, because it might be the first time in the Indonesian soccer history that hundreds had been killed in a football match riot, I hope in the future it won’t happen again,” a Malang resident said.
