Indigenous leaders angry over failed “transformative change” promises on missing and murdered women

Global News published this video item, entitled “Indigenous leaders angry over failed “transformative change” promises on missing and murdered women” – below is their description.

Indigenous leaders in Canada are disappointed in the federal government’s lack of progress on its promise of “transformative change,” one year after a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMWIG) report was published.

It was meant as a national roadmap on how to end violence against Indigenous Women. But, advocates say not nearly enough has been done to stop what the report called “a genocide.”

Hilda Anderson-Pyrz, the chair of the National Family and Survivor’s Circle, denounced what she called a lack of progress and accountability. “This is a national shame and it is also dangerous,” Anderson-Pyrz said.

On Friday, the federal government released a progress report pointing to recent advances in promoting Indigenous rights. “Things aren’t moving fast enough, but they are moving forward, ” said Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations Canada Marc Miller.
