South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “India’s rubbish scavengers left behind in vaccine programme” – below is their description.
Since India launched its national Covid-19 immunisation programme in mid-January, the country’s army of informal waste workers are yet to be vaccinated. Their proximity to dumpsites make rubbish scavengers highly vulnerable to disease. But unlike municipal sanitation workers, they are not formally employed, with limited access to health care including vaccines. The pandemic has exposed such global inequalities, as the World Health Organization (WHO) warns against the widening gap in vaccine accessibility between rich and poor.
