South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “India’s coal dependence is why Modi’s net zero emissions by 2070 pledge surprised many at COP26” – below is their description.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised the United Nations climate change conference (COP26) on November 1, 2021, with a promise that his country will reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. But phasing out coal is not so simple, especially for developing countries like India. About 4 million people were employed in the coal industry in 2021, according to the Brookings Institution think tank. The world’s “dirtiest” fossil fuel is also used to generate more than 70 per cent of the country’s energy, and part of the reason India is the third largest carbon emitter in the world after China and the US.
