As India struggles under a second wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic, auto-rickshaws have become the latest symbols of hope in Delhi, doubling up as ambulances to help the nation’s collapsing healthcare system.
More than a dozen of the three-wheeled rides have been mobilized by a not-for-profit organization in the capital, equipped out with hand sanitizers and face masks, while oxygen cylinders are provided on an as-needed basis.
In the country’s west, Hindu volunteers in Ahmedabad turned a Hindu temple into a COVID-19 care centre to help deal with the surging number of coronavirus cases that have overwhelmed the healthcare system.
The 50-bed facility in the western city of Ahmedabad would be housed in the prayer hall of the temple and would have 30 beds equipped with oxygen supply and another 20 normal beds.
Six doctors and an adequate number of nurses and paramedics will be on site to care for the patients.
India’s poorly-funded healthcare system is facing immense burden across the country with a surge in new COVID-19 cases.
Many unusual spaces, including religious sites are being converted into COVID-care centres for asymptomatic patients or those with mild symptoms.
