India recorded the highest single-day death toll in the world on Wednesday, a total of 4,529 in the past 24 hours, surpassing the previous record for most daily deaths set in January by the U.S., when Johns Hopkins University data reported 4,475 people died.
It comes even as cases appear to be flattening but amid heightened concerns the virus is spreading into the countryside where a majority of people live and where health care and testing is limited.
But even with the transmission risk still present, students, motorbike racers and other various groups volunteered to help with tasks like obtaining medication and driving ambulances in an effort to help the country’s battle against COVID-19. Sean Previl reports.
