Indian farmers’ leaders on Wednesday outlined plans to scale up months of protests against agricultural reforms, as their cause gained high-profile supporters and global attention.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities have erected extensive barricades around Delhi to prevent farmers protesting against new agricultural laws at the outskirts of the city from entering the capital, after last week’s violent clashes.
Police barricaded three main protest sites with barbed wire fences and obstructions on roads and shut off the Internet in some areas.
Tens of thousands of farmers have been camped on the outskirts of New Delhi since late last year, protesting reforms they say will leave them vulnerable to the whims of big business.
