Dozens of bodies of people who died from the coronavirus disease have been cremated at a mass cremation site in New Delhi as cases surged in India’s capital and across the country.
India ordered its armed forces on Monday to help tackle surging new coronavirus infections that are overwhelming hospitals, as countries including Britain, Germany and the United States pledged to send urgent medical aid.
New coronavirus infections in India hit a record peak for a fifth successive day, with infections rising by more than 350,000 in just 24 hours and some 2,812 deaths overnight.
India, with a population of 1.3 billion, has an official tally of 17.31 million infections and 195,123 deaths, health ministry data showed, although health experts say the figures probably run higher.
