In full: MPs debate response to Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in House of Commons

The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “In full: MPs debate response to Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in House of Commons” – below is their description.

Boris Johnson is facing a furious backlash from his own MPs over the UK’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, as he was accused of retreating “on a wing and a prayer” with his foreign policy “in tatters”.

Theresa May, Mr Johnson’s predecessor in Downing Street, and two Tory chairs of parliamentary select committees led the criticism of the Government.

The Prime Minister could be seen rolling his eyes as Mrs May questioned the widespread view that the Taliban would not overrun Kabul after the United States and its allies withdrew their troops.

She said: “Was our intelligence really so poor? Was our understanding of the Afghan government so weak? Was our knowledge of the position on the ground so inadequate? Did we really believe this?

“Or did we just feel that we had to follow the United States, and hope that that with a wing and a prayer, it would be all right on the night?” she asks.

Tobias Ellwood accused the Prime Minister of leaving the UK’s foreign policy “in tatters”.

“I think there is some complacency,” he told the BBC.

“There’s just too many plates spinning in Number 10 for them to understand what’s going on.”

Tom Tugendhat, the chair of the foreign affairs committee, recalled his own experiences in Afghanistan and called for the West to stabilise the situation in the country.

MPs have been recalled to debate the withdrawal from Afghanistan during the summer recess.
