The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “In full: Labour asks urgent question as Government accused of imposing ‘backdoor’ lockdowns” – below is their description.
The public are having to “pay the price” for the Government’s delay in adding India to the red list, which was an act of “gross negligence and incompetence”, a minister has been told.
Nadhim Zahawi faced a barrage of angry questions from Labour MPs, after it emerged that new restrictions had been imposed on Bolton, Blackburn, Kirklees, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside on the quiet.
Mohammed Yasin, Labour MP for Bedford, said the Government “sneaked” his constituency into a local lockdown, before blaming the Government for allowing the Indian variant to be imported because of its”lax approach to border control”.
Constituents are having to “pay the price for his Government’s gross negligence and incompetence once again”, he added.
Yvette Cooper, chair of the home affairs committee, asked Mr Zahawi to apologise to those affected, who were “put in this position is because the Government failed to put India on the red list earlier”.
But the vaccines minister insisted India was put onto the red list six days before it was named a variant of interest and two weeks before it was named a variant of concern “so her criticism is unfair”.
