On a visit to earthquake-hit Haiti, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed pledged the UN’s continued commitment to help with life-saving support and long-term reconstruction.
The 7.2 magnitude quake, which struck on 14 August, reportedly killed more than 2,100 people and injured some 10,000 others.
It was followed by Tropical Storm Grace, which caused flooding. An estimated 600,000 Haitians need humanitarian assistance.
Meeting leaders and affected communities during her two-day visit, Ms. Mohammed stressed the importance of long-term development for the country.
She was accompanied by the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who promised to support Haiti now and with ongoing recovery.
