Two of the international army games this year – the “Suvorov Attack” and “Safe Route” contests – were held in southwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The last competition, the “Safe Route” contest relay race, was held on Thursday, with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army claiming victory ahead of Russia and Venezuela.

To the northwest are the Andes Mountains and the colonial town of Mérida, a base for visiting Sierra Nevada National Park. Caracas, the capital, is to the north.
Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwest China, is a vast region of deserts and mountains. It’s home to many ethnic minority groups, including the Turkic Uyghur people. The ancient Silk Road trade route linking China and the Middle East passed through Xinjiang, a legacy that can be seen in the traditional open-air bazaars of its oasis cities, Hotan and Kashgar.
