The Queen has paid tribute to the “wonderful work” of the one million volunteers who have signed up to give their time during the Covid pandemic, telling them they have been a “great, great help over this difficult year”.
The 94-year-old monarch joined a video call with the Duchess of Cornwall, four Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) volunteers and the RVS chief executive, Catherine Johnston, to hear what had inspired them to join up and how they had been helping.
Almost one million new volunteers have signed up to help since last March, bringing the total to 12.7 million. The Queen, who is patron of the RVS, told them it was “very interesting” to hear what they had been doing.
“I think it’s wonderful work and I do thank everybody for, and all the others too, who have been volunteering – it’s been a great, great help, over this very difficult year,” she said. “Very nice to meet you all.”
