The US death toll from coronavirus has now surpassed China, and three quarters of Americans are now living under some form of lockdown.

But the President has struck a markedly less perturbed figure than many of his state governors, who are anxious over supplies of test kits and ventilators.

Instead, he has bragged about the ratings that his daily press conferences have been attracting.

Meanwhile US networks grapple with the ethics of broadcasting live statements that are less likely to be factual reports than electioneering in what is still a major election year.
