This wasn’t the first such incident in the U.S., not even the first this year. But the anger triggered by Floyd’s death quickly swept the country, erupting the Black Lives Matter protests. #BlackLivesMatter began in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Benjamin Martin. Video recording by a witness, showing Floyd repeating “Please”, “I can’t breathe”, and “Don’t kill me”, was widely circulated on social media platforms and broadcast by media. The incident led to widespread protests across the United States.
