This year’s Shark Week programming on the Discovery Channel shows an increase in shark activity because of undisturbed waters during the Covid-19 global lockdown.
In “Shark Lockdown,” airing August 9 at 10 p.m. EST, cameras captured the effect of the virus on waters off the coast of New Zealand where great whites are often found.
“We’re able to see them and even draw some really interesting conclusions that the researchers hadn’t been able to draw before,” teased Howard Swartz, SVP of Production and Development at Discovery Channel.
Jeff Kurr, known for his work on the popular show “Air Jaws,” discovered something similar in South Africa.
“South Africa had come out of lockdown on June 1 and we basically were in the water shooting on June 7… We’ve got incredible footage. No one had even been out to sea for four months. We didn’t even know if the sharks would be there, but we had to roll the dice and gambled that they would be there, and they were and it was incredible. The sharks seemed to miss us because they were flying out of the water and we got some great stuff.”
