The Philippines has filed a diplomatic protest over China’s passing of a law allowing its coastguard to open fire on foreign vessels. Beijing passed the legislation last week to use “all necessary means” to prevent foreign threats, including destroying structures built by other countries on Chinese-claimed reefs. Raji Pillai Rajagopalan, an expert in defence and the South China Sea from the Observer Research Foundation, tells The World there’s little recourse nations can take, which could lead to military conflict.
