Dutch police have uncovered a criminal torture chamber near the Belgian border, leading to the arrest of six men on suspicion of kidnap and assault.
The torture chamber, which contained a dentist’s chair and tools including hedge cutters, scalpels, and pliers, was housed in shipping containers in the small village of Wouwse Plantage. Thankfully, it hadn’t been used, with police tipping off potential victims who then went into hiding.
It’s the latest blow to organized crime in Europe to result from police cracking encrypted messages between suspects on the EncroChat secure communication tool. Messages were intercepted showing pictures of the containers and the chair.
The raid took place on June 22, with details now being released. Andy Kraag, head of the country’s National Investigation Service, stated that ‘six of the containers were intended as cells in which people could be tied up, and one container was intended as a torture chamber.’
