Hong Kong’s Rooftop Rebels – Witness

Airin and her friends are rooftoppers in Hong Kong. They refuse to play by the rules and spend their time pulling stunts on top of the city’s monumental skyscrapers.

Their high-rise antics and selfies have already made them an internet sensation, but there is something much deeper at play. One year after the hopes of the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement crashed into nothing, many young people are in a state of despair.

They find themselves struggling in a city where housing is prohibitively expensive, Beijing’s influence looms overhead, and an obsession with money fuels long working hours and constant stress. Through rooftopping, Airin’s crew is determined to show Hong Kong can be reclaimed.

We follow them as they wrestle with the frustrations of daily life, go on urban adventures to escape and plan a major stunt to inspire change.

Will they succeed in finding spaces where they can be themselves and pull off a feat that resonates widely, or will they be left feeling trapped and helpless in a city they are powerless to change?
