RT published this video item, entitled “Hindus pierce cheeks and skin in religious ritual” – below is their description.
Hindu devotees celebrating the Thaipusam festival in Chennai were seen having their cheeks pierced with long skewers and hooks stuck into their chests and backs.
The festival is a day of thanksgiving and of paying penance. Hindus believe that taking part in the ritual will cleanse them of their sins. It is celebrated in many countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
According to Hindu mythology, the goddess Pavarti gave her son Lord Murugan a lance to kill evil demons, which is symbolized by the skewers people use to pierce themselves with. The festival is celebrated annually on the full moon of the Tamil month of ‘Thai’. Like most recent events, the numbers in attendance were much lower than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic. In preparation for Thaipusam, daily prayer sessions are held, and worshippers abstain from sex, meat, and fish for 48 days.
