Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall inundated streets and houses in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Chennai, the state capital, along with 11 other districts, were affected by more than 20 cm of rainfall on Sunday, officials said.

Aaksh, a local resident, says it has been difficult to secure essential items such as food for the past three days, and the government has yet to offer much help.

In Sri Lanka, six people have died and around 4,300 have been affected by flooding across the country, the disaster management agency said on Monday. Two of those who died were killed by lightning.

The Indian meteorological department said heavy rainfall is expected to continue, while the meteorological department in Sri Lanka said Monday that a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal was moving closer to the island nation.

In the Atlantic and the northeastern Pacific oceans, a tropical cyclone is generally referred to as a hurricane (from the name of the ancient Central American deity of wind, Huracan), in the Indian and south Pacific oceans it is called a cyclone, and in the northwestern Pacific it is called a typhoon.
