Heat Wave in Southern Europe Fuels Wildfires in Turkey, Greece and Croatia

Bloomberg Quicktake: Now published this video item, entitled “Heat Wave in Southern Europe Fuels Wildfires in Turkey, Greece and Croatia” – below is their description.

Five water-dropping planes and five helicopters tried on Tuesday evening to control the flames of a wildfire spreading north of Athens.

Hundreds of residents living near a forest area north of the Greek capital fled their homes as the wildfire reached residential areas during on of Greece’ worst heatwave in decades.

The initial blaze began near the former royal summer residence in Tatoi around midday on Tuesday, but has now spread to Ano Varymbombi, near several horse-riding centres, and to an area just outside the residential settlement of Adames, prompting its evacuation and the closure of a section of the national highway nearby.

As the heatwave scorching the eastern Mediterranean intensified, temperatures reached 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) in parts of the Greek capital.

The blaze damaged electricity pylons, adding further strain on the electricity network already under pressure due to widespread use of air-conditioning.

The extreme weather has fueled deadly wildfires in Turkey and blazes in Greece, Albania, Italy and across the region.
