An apology from the Haidilao hot-pot chain. Customers had been angered by a six-percent rise in prices when the restaurants reopened for the first time since January. Faced with a backlash, Haidilao says it’s cutting its prices by 20 to 30 percent until April 25. It is not alone. The Xibei chain was also criticized for raising prices. It too has apologized and lowered its prices back to pre-pandemic levels. Restaurants have suffered badly since January, with rising food costs and economic losses from months of forced closures. In the first two months of 2020, the catering industry recorded a total revenue of 419 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 43.1 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. And although more restaurants are resuming dine-in services, most still adopt quite strict measures to prevent viral transmission which further adds to operating costs. Needless to say, to tide over this difficult period without transferring costs to the customers is a tough challenge for the catering industry and for many other businesses as well.
